our company

From a small regional haulier to a national integrated logistics business.

Maritime truck and train at a transport depot

The Maritime of today has grown from far more modest beginnings. When founder John Williams acquired the business in 2001, it was a small regional container haulier operating 136 trucks across five sites, with a turnover of £18 million. The acquisition also continued a long-standing family tradition, driven by John’s determination to follow in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather in building a successful transport business of his own.

In the years that followed, Maritime expanded through investment, innovation, and diversification and, despite periods of economic uncertainty, has evolved into a leading logistics business, one of the country’s largest container transport operators, a major force in retail distribution, and a trusted partner providing integrated intermodal services to exporters, importers, and the FMCG sector. While the business has changed significantly in size and scope, Maritime has retained the family-led culture and personal approach that remain evident across the organisation today.

Maritime is now delivering on its long-term vision to create the cleanest, most sustainable full-load supply chain in the country through rail expansion, alternative fuels, smarter route planning, and zero-emission technologies, playing a leading role in the decarbonisation of the freight sector and delivery of national net zero targets.
