‘I always knew I wanted to be a driver, following in my dad’s footsteps. Before joining Maritime, I’d worked across several areas of the industry – bulkers, tippers, car transporters, low loaders, multiple waste vehicles, fridges, general haulage – so I understood what made a driving role stand out having been driving for 35+ years in all different vehicles, even with the good old clutch days. For me, Maritime ticks a lot of those boxes: modern trucks, excellent facilities, flexibility in shift patterns, annual pay rises, and opportunities to progress in a company that places a huge importance on development from within. That’s one of the main reasons why, over ten years on, Maritime is still the right fit for me.’

‘Maritime is always willing to give people the chance to learn something new and progress if they show the right attitude. When I joined the business in 2011 as an HGV driver, I wanted to gain experience in different areas, and after two years on the road I was given the opportunity to train as a reach stacker operator. The in-house training gave me a really good understanding of what the role involves, from pre-use checks and safe handling through to stack alignment, trailer positioning, and working accurately under pressure in a live terminal environment. I started out covering Saturdays and holidays but soon moved onto the machines full-time. That opportunity opened up a completely new career path for me within the business, and I’m now based at Northampton Gateway as Terminal Supervisor, overseeing day-to-day operations and helping to train and mentor the next generation of machine operators at one of the UK’s newest Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges.’
Tom Hornsby
‘Joining Maritime was a blessing; leaving the RAF was a massive change but the company gave me all the support I needed to settle into a civilian role.
I’ve since completed my Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), leading to my promotion to Transport Manager in 2025.’
